Dear Penny,

Just had a good chin wag with your father and learned incidentally that you are keeping a ‘hot line’ busy between yourself and him. Like myself he is happy about your marriage and your future prospects.

I enjoyed hearing that you and Frank are studying Russian – To be able to read Pravda [would be] a help to a western newspaperman. Like all missionaries to Japan, I was given teachers (Japanese) and two years to learn the native language. Sometime when you’re visiting Toronto you may get some of that story, if you ask for it.

[ . . .]

Sincerely,

[the Rev.] Foster [Hilliard]

[This continuing relationship between my Dad and Penny’s Dad is news to me. Also the ‘hot line’ reference means she was talking to her father regularly.]
